Horse racing rides high at number two!
North West racecourses pulled in 613,000 people in 2008, cementing its place behind football as the second-biggest sport in the UK.
According to a report by accountancy firm Deloitte, horse racing generated £3.4bn in 2008, up from £2.86bn in 2005.
Sports business group director Alan Switzer said attendance levels at Chester, Aintree and Haydock continued to hold up well despite economic conditions and hailed non-racing events, which form an "important part of the local economy".
Haydock holds 1,000 of these each year, bringing in a further 100,000 visitors.
